Mobility project

Assessing the main drivers of conifer climate induced mortality at global, regional and plant scales

The CONIFMORT project is devoted to assess the main drivers of climate induced tree mortality from global to plant scales and combining spatial modelling and experimental approaches. The specific aims of the project are: 1) To assess the main climatic factors driving last decades of climate induced conifer mortality at a global scale and to obtain a representative map of conifer mortality as a response to changing climate; 2) To determine the environmental, biological and management drivers shaping the last decade mortality of nine species of conifers at the rear edge of their distribution in Western Europe; and 3) To experimentally identify the main ecophysiological drivers of drought induced mortality in conifer seedlings.

Biography & research interests

I am a Biologist with a MS in Biology Conservation from Universidad de Alcalá (Madrid, Spain). In 2012, I obtained my PhD degree in Ecology also from this University. I have made stays abroad at the Universities of California (Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara, USA), Wageningen (The Netherlands), Paris- Sud and Bordeaux (France).

I have always been interested in plant ecology, plant physiology, plant invasions and especially in plant responses to stressful conditions as water shortage and drought.

During my PhD, I performed experimental and field work studies on co-occurring tree species in the Iberian Peninsula (eleven species, among them Pinuspinaster, Quercusrobur, Ulmus minor, Acer negundo…). These studies had two main aims: to determine the environmental conditions favouring their establishment success, and to evaluate differences among tree species in their effects on the nitrogen cycle and seed bank composition.

During my first years as postdoctoral researcher, I oriented my research line into the evaluation of the impacts of climate change on tree species, specifically on tree secondary growth, tree water economies and on species distributions. I am currently working on modelling the responses of trees to climate change, combining ecological modelling with experimental studies.
