Biography

I was graduated from the University of Cambridge (Natural Science Tripos) in 2013 and completed my PhD at the University of Edinburgh in 2017. My PhD was focused on RNA silencing-based antiviral immunity in plants. During my PhD studies, I also began working with CRISPR genome editing techniques in the context of plant antiviral resistance. I was awarded an AgreenSkills+ fellowship to undertake my first postdoc position, from November 2017, at the Reproduction and Development of Plants lab at the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon. Currently I am using existing and novel genome editing methods to conduct a reverse genetic screen to better understand the molecular basis of endosperm degradation and cell wall sugar recycling during seed germination in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Abstract

Molecular Mechanisms Driving Endosperm Degradation in Developing Seeds

My research is focussed on the process of endosperm degradation during seed development, using Arabidopsis as a model system. Specifically, I am employing a reverse genetic screen to identify enzymes involved in a putative process in which sugars are recycled from the cell walls of the degrading endosperm to the growing embryo. In addition to probing the genetics of this pathway, I will be analysing the biochemical and physiological basis of cell wall sugar recycling during embryo development, seed germination, and early seedling growth.
